Sulfuric Acid 93–98% Pumps
Concentrated acid is a different materials problem than dilute acid — the concentration decides before the pump does.
The properties that drive the choice
| Hazard profile | none of note |
|---|---|
| Concentration band in our data | 93–98% |
| In one line | Concentrated acid passivates carbon steel at ambient temperature — the industry-standard material for 93–98% acid (velocity < 0.6 m/s, no dilution). Stainless grades are borderline (Grundfos rates 316 not resistant at 98%); Alloy 20 / Hastelloy or fluoroplastic linings for severe duty. Never use titanium. |
Which pump families serve it
At a reference duty (20 °C, 10 m³/h, 30 m). Your duty point may move the answer — run it through the tool below; the full report adds the alternatives worth quoting in parallel.
| Primary answer | End-Suction Centrifugal Pump (ANSI B73.1) | Clean or lightly contaminated fluids, moderate duty, flows ~2–400 m³/h |
|---|---|---|
| Typical wetted materials | Carbon Steel, PVDF, PTFE / FEP lined, Alloy 20 (CN7M), Hastelloy C-276 | |
Where the boundaries sit
- 93–98% is one of three concentration bands this site treats separately — state the number, not the word 'sulfuric'
- Concentrated acid is aggressively dehydrating: seals and elastomers are the weak points
- Dilution heat matters on the suction side; a duty that starts concentrated and ends diluted is two duties
